Over 150 artists entered the lottery to have the opportunity to have Mera Rubell visit their studio and these 36 were the lucky ones selected.  Joining Ms. Rubell and Ms. Gold at points throughout their 36 hour tour will be notable arts professionals from esteemed local museums as well as members of the press from Baltimore and Washington, DC.

After the 36 hour marathon Ms. Rubell has invited participants and all applicants to 36 Studios: Part Two to join her for an after party at the Lord Baltimore Hotel on Sunday, October 27 from 6-8:00pm.

Ms. Rubell will be conducting the studio visits in her role as a curator for SELECT 2014, Washington Project for the Arts’ 33rd annual art auction exhibition, taking place at Artisphere in Rosslyn, VA from February 27 through March 21, 2014. (Artwork will be available for purchase the night of the SELECT gala, March 22, 2014.) Rubell, who is based in Miami and New York, but frequently visits Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD for 36-hour periods to visit her hotel properties, is known for her passion for contemporary art and her deep commitment to artists. Since the family’s acquisition of the Lord Baltimore Hotel in the spring of 2013, Rubell has been increasingly interested in the vibrant Baltimore art scene and engaging with artists there.

“How are present day artists responding to the land? Have technologies like satellite imagery and the internet demystified the landscape? How are artists in turn using these technologies to enrich and influence their work? Has the reverence for the landscape that artists like George Innes and Winslow Homer portrayed in their work diminished or increased in recent artwork?" These are the questions that curators Nirmal Raja and Christopher Willey are exploring in the upcoming exhibition Chasing Horizons; which opens at the Villa Terrace Museum of Decorative Arts on May 3, 2013.
12 Artists will be exhibiting their response to the varied, open, and constantly changing concept of “landscape” through a variety of media such as digital photography, video, kinetic and site specific sculpture, paintings, and mixed media installations.
Artists: Emily Belknap, Beki Borman, Crystal Ann Brown, Stephen Cartwright, Allan DeSouza, Kevin Giese, Tonia Klein, Dara Larson, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Alessandra Torres, Clement Valla, and Jason S. Yi.
